| Object description |
Shalford, the land barony, honour or manor consists of two thousand four hundred and seventy-two acres divided into the smaller manors and mesne lordships of Shalford Hall, Abbots Hall, Nicholls, Schernehall, and Redfants. “Its lands extend from Wethersfield on the north, to Pantfield and Great Saling southward; and from the extremity of Hinckford Hundred on the west, to the river Blackwater eastward. From east to west Shalford measures three miles, and not more than two miles from north to south.” It is approximately three miles northwest of Braintree and twenty-five miles northeast of London. |

The earliest written reference to Shalford, Essex, is the Great Survey of 1086, the Domesday Book. Ancient writings reference Shalford as Shaldeford, Scanford, Shawforth, and Shelford. The name was derived from a ford over the river, “Blackwater.” At the time of the Conquest Shalford was held by Algar, earl of Mercia. Following the Conquest, William gave Shalford to his queen, Matilda; after her death in 1083, he gave Shalford to his goldsmith, Otto. In the Domesday Book, Shalford is referenced as Celdeforda and Scalde-fort; it is included with Norfolk and Sussex in the so-called “little Domesday Book.” Shalford (Celdeforda and Scaldefort) appears last in the Hinckford Hundred folio among the entries for the King’s lands. |

In 1554, Shalford was granted out of the Crown for life in the Kingdom of England to Lady Cecily Bernes, lady in waiting to Mary Queen of Scots, but reverted to the Crown following Lady Bernes death in 1562. On 25 February 1569, the Land Barony of Shalford was granted out of the Crown by Elizabeth I to William Lord Howard of Effingham, and to “his heirs, assigns and successors forever,” from whom Thomas Joshua Aaron succeeded to the Seigniory of Shalford as Lord of Shalford and the (Feudal) Baron Shalford, 10th February 1987. |
